When we first began work at Greenham the message from local residents was loud and clear: “we need more activities for young people to get them off the streets”. Young people demanded “a decent youth club”.
In November 2009 two neglected rooms at the rear of the centre were transformed into an Internet Cafe and Cafe Bar / Reception area, for the use of the young people of Greenham. Funds from the Youth Opportunity Fund and Lottery Awards for All have enabled us kit out the centre with the equipment and resources that young people wanted. In the first month of opening we attracted over 100 members and membership continues to grow.
In 2011 Greenham Common Trust invested over £250,000 in a major refurbishment of Greenham Community Centre. The former takeaway unit has been transformed into a dedicated youth room and the Community Centre is a much more welcoming and flexible space for the whole community. The centre is now managed by Community Youth Project.
